
- A recent seven-figure donation by Mary Dempsey, Chicago Library Commissioner and DePaul Trustee, and her husband, attorney Philip H. Corboy, to DePaul’s College of Law to fund scholarships for needy students was noted in an Oct. 25 Chicago Tribune cover story profile of Dempsey, which also noted that Dempsey, a DePaul alumna, is the first woman to head the board of trustees at the university.
- A DePaul vigil held Nov.2 to honor two students – Frankie Valencia and Rachel Gilliam - who died violent deaths in separate incidents on Halloween night – was widely covered by the news media, including most local television stations and the Chicago Tribune.
- English Professor Anne Clark Bartlett was prominently featured in Oct. 25 Chicago Tribune and Nov. 4 New City stories about her role in organizing Canadian author Margaret Atwood’s visit to DePaul for a theatrical book reading at the Merle Reskin Theatre Nov. 6. Also, the Web site of Chicago Magazine and the Chicago Reader made the Atwood program a Critic’s Choice selection on Nov. 4.
- An Oct. 30 lecture by dissident Iranian scholar and cleric, Ayatollah Mohsen Kadivar, sponsored by DePaul’s international studies department, was covered by the Reuters news agency and WBBM-AM 780. Kadivar also was a featured guest on WBEZ-FM 91.5’s "Worldview" program which aired Nov. 2.
- Allegations of gender discrimination in tenure cases involving DePaul faculty members were examined in a Chicago Tribune story that appeared Nov. 1.
- Raman Chadha, executive director of the Coleman Entrepreneurship Center, was interviewed by WVON-AM’s about the Obama administration increasing access to small business loans Oct. 28.
- News of the appointment of Marisol Morales, associate director of DePaul’s Steans Center, by Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn to serve on the recently formed Latino Family Commission was carried on Oct. 23 and 24 by several news outlets including the Associated Press and the Chicago Sun-Times.
- Jason Hill, associate professor of philosophy, had a lengthy Oct. 26 interview with the Jamaica Observer newspaper discussing his new book "Beyond Blood Identities" which argues that ethnic and nationalistic group identification weakens a person’s character.
- Daniel Mittelman, associate professor of computer science, was quoted in an Oct. 30 e-Commerce Times story about a $711 million legal judgment won by Facebook from spammers who had been illegally accessing the Web site.
- J.D. Bindenagel, vice president for community, government and international affairs, was featured in stories that appeared in both Der Standard and the Wiener Zietung in Austria looking back 20 years ago during his time as U.S. deputy ambassador to East Germany at the time the Berlin Wall fell.
- The Chicago Tribune gave a glowing review to the DePaul Art Museum’s "Iran Inside Out" exhibit in the Tribune Oct. 23 and on Chicago Public Radio’s Eight Forty-Eight program Oct. 27. The exhibit also received a favorable review from New City on Oct. 12. Brighton Park/McKinley Park Life ran an article about the exhibition Sept. 10, and a listing about the exhibition also ran in the Sept. 17 issue of Skyline.
- The Associated Press article on SNL’s Chronic Illness Initiative (CII) ran in the Ocala (Fla.) Star-Banner, the Chattanooga Times Free Press, Redding, Cal., Record Searchlight, and Idaho Falls, Idaho Post Register Sept. 20; the Galesburg, Ill., Register-Mail Sept. 21; and the Alpena (Mich.) News Sept. 26. Careers and the disABLED magazine also ran a short article on CII’s annual symposium and recent SNL graduate Cecilia Reyes in its summer 2009 issue.
- Kavah Ehsani, assistant professor of international studies and editor of The Middle East Report, was interviewed Nov. 4 on Free Speech Radio News, about the state of freedom in Iran 30 years after the American Embassy was seized during the Iranian revolution.
- A 2007 study on the value of political endorsements by Political Science Professor Wayne Steger was cited by the Christian Science Monitor in a Nov. 2 story on Sarah Palin’s recent endorsement activity.
- The Oct. 21 Gulf Times newspaper in Bahrain reported on the commencement ceremonies for 57 students who graduated from DePaul’s M.B.A., human resource management and finance programs there. Vice President J.D. Bindenagel and Abdullah Hassan Saif, the prime minister’s advisor for economic affairs, presided over the ceremonies.
- DePaul’s last place ranking in a survey on sexual health practices among select college campuses was noted in several media outlets including the syndicated Air America radio program on Nov. 2. The annual survey is conducted by the Trojan condom company.
- School for New Learning Assistant Professor Dana McDermott was quoted in a Medill News Service story Oct. 28 about Chicago Public Schools’ parents organizing as a union to get their voices heard.
- The Puget Sound Business Journal ran a brief about the College of Communication offering one of the first college-level classes on Twitter Sept. 11. The course was also mentioned in the Sept. 1 issue of the Sterling, Ill., Daily Gazette.
- Carson Cunningham, instructor in the College of Computing and Digital Media and adjunct faculty in the history department, discussed why Chicago lost its bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympics in an Oct. 3 article in the Sacramento Bee.
- A Careerbuilder.com story featuring SNL student Deb Setnes from Enrollment Management and Marketing as one of seven success stories of adults returning to school continued to run on various online outlets, including aol.com on Oct. 22 and AARP.org Oct. 23.
- School of Education Associate Professor Horace Hall discussed a Chicago Public School plan to provide additional mentoring to at-risk high school students to stave off youth violence in an Oct. 22 story by the Medill News Service.
- Joe Schwieterman, professor of public service and director of the Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development, was quoted in a Nov. 1 Chicago Tribune story on prospects for a state bailout of the financially ailing Chicago Transit Authority.
