
- J.D. Bindenagel, vice president for Community, Government and International Affairs, discussed his memories of the fall of the Berlin Wall during a Nov. 9 live interview on National Public Radio’s "Talk of the Nation." Bindenagel was deputy chief of mission at the American Embassy in Berlin, East Germany, when the wall fell20 years ago. He also was quoted at length in a story by the Austrian Press Agency.
- David Kalsbeek, senior vice president for Enrollment Management and Marketing, discussed an online course-tracking tool that DePaul developed to successfully attract and support transfer students in a USA Today story about the National Survey of Student Engagement. The story, published Nov. 8, noted that transfer student enrollment at DePaul increased 6.5% this fall to an all-time high of 1,655.
- The funeral of DePaul senior Frankie Valencia on Nov. 9 at St. Vincent de Paul Church, was covered by virtually every media outlet in Chicago, including the Chicago Tribune and all broadcast stations. Valencia, who was senselessly shot to death on Halloween night, was remembered as an exceptional person with a unique gift of connecting with all those he met. The charging of two suspects in his murder was also widely reported on Nov. 6.
- The nationally syndicated business news program "First Business" profiled student entrepreneur Jennifer Moran and interviewed Coleman Entrepreneurship Center Executive Director Raman Chadha on Nov. 13 about the center’s Blueprint program that helps students launch and grow businesses
- Marketing Chair Sue Fogel was interviewed by USA Today Nov. 17 about consumer credit card behavior. Holiday shoppers are more frugal when they use cash but they often use credit cards more if they see credit card logos within their eyesight at retail stores, Fogel told the interviewer.
- Kay Thurn’s appointment to head DePaul’s nursing department was reported in the Nov. 12 issue of the Inside-Booster newspaper.
- Woods Bowman, professor of public service, was quoted in a Nov. 16 Chicago Tribune story that examined whether the Daley administration might be planning to privatize Chicago’s water department.
- Tom Mockaitis, professor of political science, was on WBBM-Channel 2 on Nov. 9 discussing evidence regarding a recent plot to bomb Danish targets in retaliation for the publication of cartoons that depicted the Prophet Muhammad. He also was a guest on WTTW Channel 11’s "Chicago Tonight" on Nov. 16 discussing the implications of housing terrorism suspects at Illinois’ Thomson Correctional Facility.
- David Ehrlich, visiting professor of public service, commented on Illinois dire state budget situation on WBBM-Channel 2’s evening newscast on Nov. 13.
- Finance Professor Rebel Cole was part of a panel of experts on WTTW-Channel 11’s "Chicago Tonight" that analyzed the rising Dow Jones Industrial Average and lagging economy Nov. 11.
- College of Communication Instructor Craig Kanalley discussed his Twitter journalism class as part of an hourlong program on the future of media that streamed live on foxbusiness.com Oct. 23 and aired on FOX Business Network Oct. 31.
- A candidates’ debate among those vying for the Democratic nomination for Cook County Board president, co-sponsored by the DePaul Student Democrats and held on DePaul’s Lincoln Park Campus, was widely covered by the news media, including the Chicago Sun-Times, WLS-Channel 7 and WFLD-Channel 32.
- Lucia Dettori, associate dean of the College of Computing and Digital Media, CDM alum Philip Swarbrick and CDM’s dual-degree programs were featured in a Nov. 5 article in the Education Today section of the Chicago Tribune. Finance Department Chair Ali Fatemi also was featured in the section for his classes that have incorporated the economic downturn into the curriculum.
- James Wolfinger, assistant professor of secondary history in the School of Education, discussed the history of transit strikes in Philadelphia in an Associated Press story that ran in the Nov. 6 Philadelphia Inquirer.
- School of Education Assistant Professor Harry London discussed the impact of Chicago Public Schools closings on students in a Nov. 5 Medill News Service article.
- Lawrence Hamer, associate dean of the Kellstadt Graduate School of Management, was interviewed Nov. 4 by ForbesWoman magazine about the advantages and flexibility of specialized master’s degrees for business students.
- DePaul student and Army veteran Katherine West and DePaul’s Veterans Day events were mentioned Nov. 11 on WBBM-Channel 2. West and Derrick Winding, president of the DePaul Veterans Advocacy Group, also were interviewed about the importance of addressing the mental health needs of veterans in light of the Fort Hood shootings in a video on Medill News Service’s Web site Nov. 11. DePaul student Phil Bell was among the veterans featured in a Nov. 11 Southtown Star article.

- Two performances hosted by the College of Communication to coincide with the National Communication Association convention in Chicago were listed in The New Gay Nov. 12.
- WLS-Channel 7 aired a story Nov. 11 on the pleas for information issued from the family of Rachel Gilliam, a DePaul senior who was killed in a hit-and-run incident in the early morning hours of Nov. 1.
- The Nov. 15 Chicago Sun-Times mentioned that DePaul College of Law graduate Jerome Listecki was named archbishop of Milwaukee.
- Investment Business Weekly and Marketing Business Weekly featured stories about Mary Dempsey and Philip Corboy’s gift to the College of Law in their Nov. 8 edition. The story was also carried in the Nov. 7 edition of Business & Finance Week.
- Charles Tucker, executive director of the International Human Rights Institute, was quoted in a Nov. 17 story by the Medill News Service about the Guantanamo detainees coming to Chicago.
- DePaul’s Family Law Center’s expanded prostitution study was a feature piece in Chicago Lawyer Magazine’s online edition Nov. 13. The story ran in the magazine’s "Around the Water Cooler" section.
