- A $2 million donation to DePaul’s College of Commerce from Chicago-based investment manager John Keeley and his wife, Barbara, was the subject of a Dec. 12 Crain’s Chicago Business story and a Dec. 5 Chicago Tribune story. As a result of the donation, the Christopher Keeley Endowed Chair in Investment Management has been created in honor of the Keeley’s youngest son, a DePaul graduate who died suddenly at the age of 29 in 2002.
- The Chicago Mercantile Exchange Foundation’s $1 million gift to the Fred Arditti Center in DePaul’s College of Commerce was detailed in the Dec. 12 Chicago Tribune. Stories on the CME Foundation gift also ran in the Chicago Sun-Times on Dec. 13 and in HedgeWorld Dec. 12.
- Doug Crocker, the founding sponsor of DePaul’s Real Estate Center and executive in residence in the finance department, was the subject of a Dec. 1 Chicago Sun-Times feature story.
- Psychology Professor Sheldon Cotler was quoted about teenage risk-takers in a Dec. 12 Gary Post-Tribune article about teens who break speed limits in order to avoid breaking curfews.
- The new Multicultural Marketing-Hispanic Marketplace undergraduate major offered by DePaul’s College of Commerce was the subject of a Dec. 5 Brandweek story and a Dec. 1 Hispanic Business story.
- Political Science Professor Larry Bennett was quoted extensively in a Dec. 8 Chicago Tribune story about Mayor Richard M. Daley’s expected announcement to seek a sixth term as mayor of Chicago. Also Patricia Werhane, director of the Institute for Business and Professional Ethics and the Wicklander Chair in Business Ethics was quoted in the Dec. 7 Tribune on the propriety of Mayor Daley accepting gifts from staff members in light of heightened federal scrutiny of his administration.
- Aminah McCloud, Islamic studies professor, was quoted in a Dec. 10 Indianapolis Star article about Ingrid Mattson, the first woman to lead the Islamic Society of North America.
- The Chicago Jewish News remembered Accounting Professor Gary Siegel in a Dec. 6 article. Siegel, founder of Chicago’s Jewish Burial Society, died Nov. 12 at the age of 62. The Chicago Tribune also carried an extensive obituary on Siegel Nov. 23.
- The Kalamazoo Gazette featured DePaul student Allie Brinkerhoff and her mother, Stevie, in a Dec. 4 story about the two being among 314 “Oprah Winfrey Show” audience members invited to take part in Winfrey’s Pay it Forward Challenge. With a $1,000 gift card given by Winfrey, Brinkerhoff revamped a reading program at an outpatient children’s clinic of Children’s Memorial Hospital.
- Joseph Schwieterman, director of the Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development, was quoted in a Dec. 4 Crain’s Chicago Business story about the development of Megabus and its effect on Greyhound profits. He also was interviewed Dec. 13 on ABC7 and NBC5 for stories regarding a possible merger between United and Continental airlines and was quoted in a Nov. 28 Daily Herald story about the O’Hare expansion project.
- Management Professor Laura Hartman discussed how businesses may respond to a minimum wage increase in an interview with reporter Gary Zidek on WBCD-FM, the national public radio affiliate in Glen Ellyn.
- A meeting held by members of DePaul’s master’s of public service graduate program, non-profit agencies, churches and government entities to discuss efforts to assist in the long-term recovery of parishes affected by hurricanes Katrina and Rita was mentioned in the Lafayette (La.) Advertiser Dec. 1.
- Ruby Mann of DePaul’s mental health center was one of three people profiled in a December Essence magazine story about people who positively shape their world.
- Law Professor Jeffrey Shaman was quoted in a Nov. 30 Chicago Tribune story about Illinois Chief Justice Robert Thomas.

- Joel Schaffer, DePaul’s senior director of planned giving, was quoted in a Nov. 26 Chicago Tribune story about the rise and popularity of real estate donation.
- David Moberg, adjunct professor of history at DePaul, was interviewed on CLTV Dec. 3 regarding emerging trends in Chicago’s manufacturing base and the decline of industrial jobs.
- Harold Welsch, the Coleman Foundation Endowed Chair in Entrepreneurship at DePaul, was quoted in a Nov. 12 Daily Southtown story about how the re-election of Democratic Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s administration will effect small businesses.

- Professor M. Cherif Bassiouni will talk with veteran broadcast journalist John Callaway in an in-depth, half-hour interview on WTTW-Channel 11’s “Chicago Tonight” program scheduled to air on Friday, Nov. 24, 2006 at 7:30 p.m. The program will examine Prof. Bassiouni’s founding of the International Human Rights Law Institute in DePaul’s College of Law and his recent work to help rebuild the legal system in Iraq.
- Andrea Lyon, director of the Center for Justice in Capital Cases, helped put DePaul in the news around the world when she spoke at a Nov. 17 event that featured talks by former Gov. George Ryan and former death row inmate Madison Hobley. The event, sponsored by the DePaul chapter of the Campaign to End the Death Penalty, was widely covered by local, national and international media and DePaul was prominently mentioned in the stories. The Chicago Tribune, Sun-Times, the Associated Press, the Los Angeles Times, all local television stations and many radio stations covered the event. Coverage was also picked up in numerous other media outlets as far away as Taiwan.
- Miriam Ben-Yoseph of DePaul’s School for New Learning was named Illinois Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). The story was covered in the Nov. 17 Sun-Times.
- The November issue of Midwest Construction magazine featured a news item and photo about developer George Ruff’s donation earlier this year to DePaul’s Real Estate Center.
- The Wall Street Journal quoted Joan Junkus, professor of finance, and one of her students in an Oct. 30 article about what it takes to succeed in a career in international finance.
- Business ethics professor Laura Hartman was featured in a story about the public’s growing anger over CEO malfeasance on National Public Radio’s “Marketplace” program which aired Nov. 17.
- Michael Mezey, professor of political science, was one of three panelists on WGN Radio’s “Extension 720 with Milt Rosenberg” on Nov. 8 dissecting the meaning and impact of the November 7 elections. Prof. Mezey was also featured in election stories by Telemundo and the Medill News Service.
- DePaul Theatre School alumnus Zach Helm was profiled in a front-page story in the Nov. 5 Sunday Chicago Tribune’s Arts section which detailed his instant Hollywood fame for writing the current Will Ferrell comedy “Stranger than Fiction.”
- A Nov. 3 story in the Chicago Defender quoted political science professor Harry Wray on the favorable environment for Democrats in a story on three African American candidates who sought governor’s seats this election season.
- Marketing professor Bruce Newman was called on by the northwest suburban Daily Herald for a Nov. 5 story to explain the reasoning for the growing use of automatic phone messages being made by political candidates.
- Joe Schwieterman, professor of public policy and director of DePaul’s Chaddick Institute, was interviewed on Nov. 16 on the nationally syndicated “First Business” television program about the proposed merger of US Airways and Delta airlines.
- Lou Kleinman, an Emmy Award-winning visiting associate professor in DePaul’s Digital Cinema program, was spotlighted along with his dog, Maya, on “The Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan” program on the National Geographic Channel. Kleinman’s segment on the program was produced in-house at DePaul and aired nationally on Nov. 20. The program was promoted in Rob Feder’s media column in the Chicago Sun-Times.
- A Nov. 20 Associated Press article quoted DePaul junior Nora Vail on her reaction to a proposal by a U.S. Congressman to reinstate the military draft. The article ran in more than 800 newspapers and Internet media outlets worldwide.

- A front page, Nov. 3 Chicago Tribune Tempo story featured DePaul’s Lincoln Park campus and senior Alexis Presseau and examined the critical role student ambassadors play in new student recruitment.
- Assistant Professor of Finance Jonathan Dombrow was quoted extensively, and the Real Estate Center at DePaul was prominently highlighted in a page-one Nov. 3 Chicago Sun-Times story in the real estate section.
- The Sun-Times, WBBM-AM, WBEZ and seven television stations covered the DePaul College Democrats’ Nov. 1 “Get Out the Vote” rally with Ill. Sen. Dick Durbin and Democratic National Committee Chair Howard Dean. The event was also extensively featured in national news coverage.

- The Chicago Tribune business section ran an article Oct. 11 about the establishment of the Horne endowed chair at DePaul’s Real Estate Center and the hiring of prominent academic James Shilling to fill the post.
- DePaul was featured prominently in Entrepreneur magazine/Princeton Review’s rankings of the best university entrepreneur programs in the country published in the October issue of the magazine. DePaul’s graduate program ranked second, while DePaul’s undergraduate program placed third in the national rankings. The rankings also appeared in a Chicago Tribune brief Sept. 25.
- Finance Professor Susanne Cannon, the Douglas and Cynthia Crocker Endowed Director of the Real Estate Center at DePaul, and assistant professor of finance Jonathan Dombrow discussed residential real estate trends in an October Chicago magazine story about the local housing market.
- DePaul Jazz Studies student Justin Thomas was featured in the October issue of Ebony magazine in a story headlined “Terrific Teens: Young Achievers Showcase Exceptional Talent.” The 19-year-old Thomas has already performed with Wynton Marsalis and the late Lionel Hampton. In June the City of Baltimore proclaimed a day in Justin’s honor because of his extraordinary musical talent.
- Commerce Dean Ray Whittington and the Rev. Dennis H. Holtschneider, DePaul president, were chosen to be included in the education section of the annual Who’s Who in Chicago Business issued by Crain’s Chicago Business magazine Sept. 4.
- Barry Kellman of DePaul’s College of Law was interviewed on ABC-7’s 5 p.m. newscast on Oct. 9.
- Joe Schwieterman, professor of public policy and director of DePaul’s Chaddick Institute, was featured in an Oct. 12 story on CBS-2’s 10 p.m. newscast on the possibility of a “no-fly” zone being established around Chicago’s downtown in the wake of the private plane crash in New York. He noted that such a zone would do little to prevent attacks.
- Accounting Today ran an item Oct. 2 about a team of DePaul students who earned first place in the KPMG-Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting Case Competition, a national accounting case contest, in August. The team and their sponsor, Beth Murphy, associate professor of accountancy, were also pictured and featured in a story in Inside, the Lincoln Park community paper on Aug. 23.
- The DePaul Art Museum was mentioned in a Sept. 29 Tribune article about Chicago artist Julia Thecla. Thelca’s work is on display at the art museum through Nov. 22.
- A free School of Music concert, featuring the complete Mozart sonatas performed by members of the AmerKlavier Studio and School of Music faculty members, was listed in a Tribune article Sept. 29 about places to sample free classical music.
- Economics Professor Peter Bernstein’s article on the Chicago White Sox was featured in the October issue of the Chicago Sports Review magazine. Professor Bernstein is a regular contributor to the Chicago Sports Review.
- Music faculty member Charlie Vernon was featured on the “Artbeat” segment of Chicago Tonight Sept. 28 on WTTW-TV. He was soloist for the world premiere of “Chick’a’Bone Checkout,” a trombone concerto written for Vernon and performed on Sept. 28 and 29 at Symphony Center.
- Tribune columnist Eric Zorn’s keynote speech delivered to faculty and staff at DePaul’s Media Recognition Luncheon Sept. 27 appeared on a Tribune Web log.
- Sociology Professor Kiljoong Kim was interviewed for an HBO documentary “Wait ‘Til Next Year: The Saga of the Chicago Cubs,” which began airing Sept. 26.
- English Professor Jonathan Gross was mentioned in a Washington Times article Sept. 24 about America’s third president Thomas Jefferson. Professor Gross has compiled into scrapbooks some of the poems that Jefferson cut and pasted during his 1800-1808 presidency which he gave his granddaughters as gifts.
- DePaul’s new Lincoln Park residence hall, Loft-Right, was featured on CLTV Sept. 23.
- Professor of Islamic Studies Aminah McCloud was quoted in a Sept. 23 Tribune article about the ailing Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan. Professor McCloud also was quoted on WBBM-TV Sept. 22 about Farrakhan.

- The Chicago Tribune ran a full-page article on Sept. 15 about the new Hillel Center at the Lincoln Park Campus Student Center. The Rev. Dennis Holtschneider was quoted prominently along with James Doyle, vice president for student affairs. Assistant Professor of Management Robert Rubin and Hillel student president Brian Barasch noted how welcoming DePaul is for Jewish students and faculty. DePaul’s history of diversity was profiled, and the university’s recent first place diversity ranking from Princeton Review was cited.
- DePaul College of Law Professor M. Cherif Bassiouni was profiled in the Tribune on Sept. 15 in a lengthy review of his lifetime of work in the field of international human rights law.
- A Sept. 14 Associated Press report on upscale campus housing featured the new Loft-Right residence hall in Lincoln Park, with several positive quotes from DePaul students. The article ran in numerous prominent media outlets, including CNN.com, MSNBC.com, the Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times. Chicago Magazine also published a feature story about Loft-Right in its September edition.
- The Tribune ran an article on Sept. 16 on how private developers are working with universities to create new housing options for students. Both Loft-Right and University Center were prominently featured, and a DePaul student was quoted in the lead of the article.
- DePaul Management professor Laura Hartman was quoted in the San Francisco Chronicle Sept. 13 about the ethical implications of separating a corporate chairman’s positions from that of a CEO.
- Chicago Sun-Times real estate columnist David Roeder featured the $1.5 million dollar gift to the Real Estate Center by DePaul alumnus George L. Ruff in his Sept. 6 column. Crain’s Chicago Business posted a story about the donation on its Web site Sept. 5 and GlobeStreet.com, a commercial real estate news Web site, covered the gift Sept. 11.
- History Professor Tom Mockaitis was a panelist on WTTW’s “Chicago Tonight” on Sept. 7 to discuss the mock disaster drill in the Loop earlier that day, and the city’s preparedness for a real disaster. Mockaitis was also prominently featured in an Aug. 30 Reuters article that discussed the Battle of Baghdad and counter-insurgency techniques.
- Professor of Islamic Studies Aminah McCloud was quoted in an Associated Press article on Muslim marriage contracts and women’s rights that ran in more than 50 newspapers nationwide between Aug. 26-30, including the Washington Post, the Miami Herald and New York Newsday. McCloud was also interviewed on “Chicago Tonight” on Sept. 10 about how the Muslim community in the United States had been affected in the five years since 9/11. She was interviewed on the same subject for a Sept. 10 article in the Decatur (Ill.) Herald and Review.
- Director of the Center for Community Research Leonard Jason commented on a recent Chronic Fatigue Syndrome study for a health news wire article that ran in Forbes.com, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the Austin American-Statesman on Sept. 3.
- College of Law Professor Len Cavise was interviewed by WFLD-TV’s morning news and WTTW’s “Chicago Tonight” about the sentencing in former Gov. George Ryan’s corruption trial on Sept. 6.
- Computer Science Professor Ashley Morris was interviewed by British television network ITN on the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Morris discussed the rebuilding of New Orleans, and his recent database research that could help aid disaster response in future hurricanes. A resident of New Orleans, Morris was also featured in a Sept. 10 Times-Picayune article on New Orleans natives who have returned to the city to make their homes there and help rebuild in the wake of the disaster.
- The DePaul Art Museum’s opening exhibition of Julia Thecla’s work was featured photographically in the Sept. 8 issue of the Chicago Reader and was noted in the gallery event listings section.
- Marketing Professor Bruce Newman was quoted prominently in a Sept. 16 article by the Associated Press. Newman discussed political marketing strategy for the upcoming midterm elections in the wake of several convictions of prominent Republican politicians in the state. The article ran in a dozen newspapers in Ohio and eastern Indiana, including the Akron Beacon Journal. Newman was also quoted in a Sept. 1 Salt Lake Tribune article about the political ramifications of President Bush’s messaging in a speech in Utah the day before.
- On Sept. 7, the Chicago Sun-Times profiled Beth Lacke, Theatre School alumna, in advance of the debut of her new Fox-TV sitcom, “Happy Hour.”
- Joe Schwieterman, professor of public service and director of the Chaddick Institute, was quoted in a Sept. 12 Reuters article on the competition among U.S. airlines to add flights to China. The article was picked up by the Washington Post.
- College of Law Professor Patty Gerstenblith was quoted in a Sept. 10 Boston Globe article about a local lawsuit involving heirloom artwork that was believed to have been looted by the Nazis during World War II.

- John Ahern, professor of accountancy, was quoted in an Aug. 28 Chicago Sun-Times story about the College of Commerce’s new Center for Global Accountancy Education, Benchmarking and Research, established to improve financial accounting practices in developing countries.
- Eva Patrikakou, professor of education, gave advice to parents about communicating with their children’s teachers in a Chicago Tribune “How To” column Aug. 27.
- A front page story in the Aug. 24 RedEye quoted J.D. Bindenagel, DePaul vice president of Community, Government and International Affairs, about conflict diamonds, which are the subject of two current documentaries and an upcoming movie. From 2002 to 2003 Bindenagel led a U.S. government negotiation team that banned trade in conflict diamonds used to finance rebellions against legitimate governments in Africa.
- Joe Schwieterman, director of the Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development, discussed how Midwest drought has affected the railroad industry in a CNBC story Aug. 23. He also was interviewed by WLS-TV Aug. 10 about heightened security at airports after a foiled plot to bomb flights to the United States.
- DePaul attracted media coverage for being honored in two rankings guidebooks released this month. DePaul was chosen No. 1 in the nation for its diverse student body in the 2007 edition of Princeton Review’s The Best 361 Colleges, which was based on a survey of 115,000 students on 361 college campuses. U.S.News & World Report’s 2007 America’s Best Colleges recognized DePaul’s service learning program among the 25 best in the nation in its programs to look for category. The Princeton Review ranking was mentioned on WBBM-TV and WLS-TV Aug. 23 and by the Chicago Tribune Aug 22.
- Law Professor Rodney Blackman was interviewed by the Tribune and WMAQ-TV Aug. 22 about free speech issues involving a McHenry County ban on the use of mascots in street advertising.
- Law Professor Leonard Cavise was interviewed by WFLD-TV Aug. 18 about the confession of John Karr to the murder of JonBenet Ramsey. He also was interviewed about police torture on WBBM-AM Aug. 11 in a story about a protest against former Chicago Police commander John Burge.
- Law Professor Andrea Lyon was quoted in a Detroit Free Press story Aug. 17 about U.S. District Judge Paul Gadola’s reluctant decision to revoke the bond of convicted murder Kylleen Hargrave-Thomas, sending her back to prison. Lyon currently represents Hargrave-Thomas.
- DePaul was one of the schools surveyed in an Aug. 18 CNN Headline News report about the increase in tuition and fees for both public and private schools.
- Lisa Kerouac, associate director of admissions, was quoted on WLS-TV Aug. 16 about the improvement of entrance exam scores for Illinois students.
- Barbara Radner, director of DePaul’s Center for Urban Education, was quoted in an Aug. 16 Tribune article about the rise of ACT scores for Illinois high school graduates. According to the article, students in every racial and ethnic group saw an improvement in their scores.

July 13 and 14, he was quoted on WLS-TV about United Airlines’ headquarters moving to downtown Chicago. He also was quoted in several national stories about airline industry capacity issues and a no frills bus line. His expertise on that issue appeared in the Wall Street Journal and USA Today, and he was interviewed by CNN Radio and CBS Radio in New York July 6 and 7.

- A long-term project by DePaul's public service graduate program to help hurricane-ravaged New Orleans plan the rebuilding of its Mid-City neighborhood was the subject of a May 30 Chicago Tribune feature story, “Lessons in Disaster Recovery: DePaul Students in News Orleans Get Hands-On Education in Public Service.” Gloria Simo, assistant director of DePaul’s Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development, and students were quoted.
- Master of Public Service Professor Joe Schwieterman, director of the Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development at DePaul, penned opinion pieces published in the Tribune May 30 and the Chicago Sun-Times May 25, and he was interviewed by the Daily Herald May 11, about United Airline’s potential move to a new headquarters. He also was interviewed about O’Hare airport expansion issues for a May 17 Tribune story.
- The Sun-Times ran a feature story – with a page 1 mention – May 29, and WLS-TV broadcast stories May 19 and May 21, about student Terrance Barker overcoming the odds to earn his law degree from DePaul’s College of Law. Barker was paralyzed in a tragic accident when he was just 29 hours short of earning his law degree. With courage and determination, he was able to fight his way back and earn his degree at the college’s May 21 commencement, which WLS-TV covered.
- WBBM-TV on May 28 mentioned the fifth anniversary celebration for the Center for Justice in Capital Cases at DePaul’s College of Law. The May 31 event features a keynote address by Sister Helen Prejean, author of the book, "Dead Man Walking."

- Numerous media stories reflected on the legacy of Coach Ray Meyer in the wake of his death at the age of 92 on March 17. - The March issue of Fortune Small Business recognized DePaul’s Leo V.
