Serving 24,352 students, DePaul University is the largest Catholic university in the nation and the largest private, not-for-profit university in the Midwest.        
  • DePaul is the eighth largest private, not-for-profit university in the nation. Of the 10 largest private universities, all except DePaul are classified as "research extensive" universities, making DePaul the nation's largest university with a primary mission of teaching and service.

  • DePaul's doctoral program faculty is the most productive in the country among universities with fewer than 15 doctoral programs, according to the Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index issued in January of 2007. The index rates scholarly contributions—such as faculty books and articles published, journal citations, awards, honors and grants—at more than 7,000 doctoral programs across the nation. DePaul, which offers doctoral programs in clinical psychology, philosophy, computer science and education, was ranked first among universities in its category. Harvard University was ranked first among universities with 15 or more doctoral programs.

  • The Princeton Review survey ranked DePaul's campus setting No. 1 among the nation’s top 20 in the "Great College Towns" category for 2009. It's the seventh straight year DePaul has been in the top 20. DePaul’s outstanding community relations also have been repeatedly ranked among the nation’s top 20 in the category of "Town-Gown Relations are Good."

  • DePaul students were ranked among the happiest in the United States in a nationwide survey of thousands of students by the Princeton Review for its 2003 and 1999 "Best Colleges" publications. DePaul also ranked among the top 20 in this category in 2002 and 2005.

  • In 2003, Colleges and Careers magazine listed DePaul as one of the 20 "Cool Schools" in the country that students should consider.

  • DePaul was named one of the top "Schools that are Hot and Trendy" and one of the "Schools with the Most Beautiful Campus in an Urban Setting" in a national survey of high school guidance counselors titled the "2003 Unofficial, Unbiased Guide to the 328 Most Interesting Colleges" from Kaplan Publishing.

Diversity

  • Princeton Review ranked DePaul No. 1 in the nation in the "Diverse Student Population" category of its annual survey of the best colleges and universities in the United States for its 2007 edition of "The Best 366 Colleges." In 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2008, The Princeton Review recognized DePaul for having one of the top 20 most diverse student populations in the country. In 2004, U.S.News & World Report also named DePaul among the nation’s 50 most diverse campuses.

  • DePaul is a national leader in the number of bachelor’s and master’s degrees awarded to students of color in several disciplines. DePaul was recognized for the diversity of its graduates in the 2008 Diverse Issues in Higher Education rankings of the 100 top minority degree-producing institutions.

  • DePaul was ranked in the top 100 in the nation in awarding bachelor’s and master’s degrees to Hispanic students, according to The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education's 2006 rankings.

  • DePaul has been ranked three times in recent years as one of the top 25 universities for Hispanic students by Hispanic magazine.

  • DePaul’s clinical psychology doctoral program won the American Psychological Association’s Richard M. Suinn Minority Achievement Award for excellence in ethnic minority recruitment, retention and training in 2007.

  • DePaul was recognized among the 100 best campuses in the nation for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered students by "The Advocate College Guide for LGBT Students" in 2006.

  • The Chronic Illness Initiative in DePaul's School for New Learning was named one of the 30 "Smart Business Ideas" in higher education by University Business magazine in its December 2007 issue.

Community Service

  • For the sixth consecutive year, DePaul's service learning program was honored in U.S.News & World Report's 2008 annual college rankings of the nation's top 25 service learning programs. The publication sought out "schools with outstanding examples of academic programs that are believed to lead to student success." DePaul was the only Illinois university honored for service learning.
  • DePaul was recognized as one of the country's best universities for fostering social responsibility and public service in the 2005 national guidebook "Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement." Published by Princeton Review, it notes the nation’s top colleges and universities that excel in developing socially engaged students. The authors cited several programs and characteristics that made DePaul stand out, including its Community-based Service Learning program.
  • DePaul was one of only 62 schools in the nation—and the only one in Illinois—to be recognized in the highest distinction category of a Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching classification in community engagement in 2006.

Business

  • The part-time MBA program at DePaul's Kellstadt Graduate School of Business was ranked ninth in the nation by U.S.News & World Report in its "America's Best Graduate Schools 2010" guidebook.

  • Entrepreneur magazine and The Princeton Review ranked DePaul's undergraduate entrepreneurship program eighth and the graduate program ninth nationally among more than 2,300 schools surveyed for this year's "Best Schools for Entrepreneurs".

  • DePaul’s MBA degree programs were rated among the top three in Chicago's highly competitive business school market, according to a ranking of local MBA programs by Crain's Chicago Business in October 2008. DePaul was rated No. 1 by recruiters for its human resources MBA concentration.

  • Fortune Small Business' rating of "America's Best Colleges for Entrepreneurs" published in the magazine's September 2007 issue, praised DePaul's entrepreneur programs for emphasizing "learning by doing." The magazine ranked DePaul's undergraduate entrepreneurship program as one of the 25 best programs in the country, and the Kellstadt Graduate School of Business was named among the nation's top 26 "b-schools with entrepreneurial flair" for its entrepreneur MBA concentration. Outreach programs offered by the Coleman Entrepreneurship Center and Center for Creativity and Innovation were also applauded by the magazine. Management Professor Gerhard Plaschka was chosen as a top professor.

Law

  • DePaul's College of Law is ranked among the 100 best law schools in the nation by U.S.News & World Report, which placed the school at 87 in its "America's Best Graduate Schools 2010" guidebook. The college's health law program and intellectual property program also ranked well. The law school’s diverse student body also was noted in the rankings.
  • The Princeton Review named DePaul's College of Law as one of the nation’s 170 most outstanding law schools in its 2008 law school guide. DePaul's friendly and knowledgeable faculty, nationally ranked intellectual property and health law programs, spirit of public service and location in Chicago’s Loop also were lauded in the book.

Arts

  • The School of Music’s performance management program was named one of the 23 best cross-discipline programs in Fortune Small Business’ review of entrepreneur education programs, "America’s Best Colleges for Entrepreneurs," in September 2007.
  • The School of Music was named one of the "Schools That Rock" in the 2005 Rolling Stone guidebook that evaluated collegiate music schools nationally. The book noted opportunities for DePaul music students to gain practical experience performing with Chicago professional music ensembles and lauded the school's performing arts management and sound recording technology programs.
  • The New York Times "Education Life" section has listed The Theatre School at DePaul among the top nine schools most often mentioned by casting directors and theatrical agents for the quality of the master’s program in acting.

Technology

  • DePaul’s College of Computing and Digital Media was one of only six schools nationwide (and the only one in the Midwest) selected by Sony Pictures Imageworks to take part in the inaugural Imageworks Professional Academic Excellence (IPAX) program. The program is a collaboration to educate faculty and structure curricula in an effort to develop future artists, designers, animators and engineers who will help the visual effects industry to grow.
  • DePaul’s College of Computing and Digital Media is a recognized national leader in computer network security and information assurance education, according to the National Security Agency and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. DePaul was named a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance by the two agencies in early 2005, and redesignated with the honor in 2008.
